Massacre of Partition 1947

The last viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten (1946-1947) was known for his quick and form decisions as he was informally given more powers to decide things on the spot.

Lord Mountbatten was chosen to finish British Business in India as soon as Possible and to formulate & implement the Partition Policy, thus giving India Independence.

He Came uр  with Indian Independence Act 1947( came into force on July 18th 1947 , Implemented on August 15th 1947 ) through Mountbatten plan, also known as Plan of Partition/ Juke plan/Balkanisation plan/Dickie Bird plan.

India & Pakistan was to become 2 self-governed , independent dominions on 15 August 1947,Governor-General for each dominion , Constituent Assemblies to exercise: the powers of legislative of each dominion but British Passed Partition Rule on 5 July 1947, too less time for managing affairs

Mountbatten thought about becoming Governey-General for both countries; But Pakistan (Jinnah) denied it; This led to huge mismanagement of State Affairs.

Policing were not ready for handling huge number of Migrations, which led to severe partition massacre. Nevertheless, partition completely failed to prevent the Punjab Massacre of september 1947 due to

  • No constitution / body to address partition issues.
  • Jinnah became the governor General Pakistan others lack of dink between India & Pakistan.
  • Delayed announcement, Commission Award to of Boundary ley British escape from disturbances aftermath

Many people died in the partition due to hunger, migration and communal violence .

Earlier Central Legislative Assembly was to be dissolved; New Dominion Legislative Assembly were to be formed which proved to be a humongous task.

PARTITION 1947

Greater need for Partition

  • Fear of Balkanisation of Indian States.
  • Religious & Communal Violence Riots, were becoming unmanageable.
  • Muslim League being in Majority was in favour of speedy procedure.

The partition was one of the black, chapters in Indian freedom struggle. And it's horrible consequences still remains which been a major threat to India. Thus, this turn of events ultimately lead to partitioning of India, which is still debated on. PM Modi inaugurated 14 August as "Partition Horror Remembrance Day."
