Mizo - the land of Mizo people, a land bridge between Bangladesh and Myanmar

A Gateway to the South East Asia under Look East Policy by P.V Narsimha Rao , former Prime minister of India.


Background

It was previously Lushai Hills in the colonial period, but later named as Mizo which is a district in Assam.

In the Mizo Insurgency 1966- 1986, it became a Union territory of Government of India later on 23rd February 1987, it became a Full fledged 23rd State of Union of India


In 1895, the Lushai Hills was annexed by the British. Christianity spread across the Mizoram. Previously, there's no written script and dialogue for Mizo. English was introduced by the British and it became the majority speaking language. Only 8% are Buddhists (majority of Chakma Tribes) while 90% of the population belonging to Christian religion.



Mizo Insurgency 1966-1986

It is because of Agricultural Famine in 1959, Mautam.

Because of the Mautam , which is a phenomenon after every 48 years , blooming of bamboo flowers takes place, was hit by a rats and insects. 


Local people blamed the State Government of Assam and Union Government of India for their negligence in assuring the relief measures. Due to this, Mizo National Front was formed which later became a political party, headed by Laldenga. On 28th February, 1966 , armed uprising against the Government took place with the help of China.


On 1st March,1966 they declared themselves Independence. It is suppressed by the military forces and later Mizoram became a Union Territory of India.


Mizo Peace Accord was signed between Union Government and MNF leader, Laldenga. On 20th February, 1987 , it became a Full fledged state. Laldenga became the first Chief Minister for Mizoram.


Culture and Religion

It has different tribes some of them are namely Lushai, Lai, chakma, Mara, paite, Hmar.

Festival- Pawl, Chapchar Kut, Mim Kut


Religion- Predominantly Christians


Mizoram has 8 Administrative Districts, The Capital City Aizawl, Serchipp, Lawantlai, Chhimtuipui , Mamit, Kolasib, Champhai, Lunglei.

GeoPolitical Boundaries

It shares boundaries with Assam, Tripura, Manipur and International borders of 318 kms with Bangladesh guarded by BSF and 404 km to the South East by Myanmar protected by Assam Rifles, a paramilitary force.

Because of the cultural relations with Myanmar, a Free Movement Regime for 72hrs without visa Restrictions is allowed between Mizoram and Myanmar. It is important gateway to the South East Asia and to the South China.
