Govt. of India followed Test, Track and Treat’ strategy diligently and continued the emphasis on preventive measures to contain the spread of the virus.


On 16th January 2021, India launched the National COVID Vaccination Programme that commenced with vaccination to all Health Care Workers


Ayushman Bharat (AB) marks paradigm shift to move from sectoral and selective approach of health service delivery to a comprehensive range of healthcare service.

Under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), around 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families, identified as per SocioEconomic Caste Census database, are entitled for health cover of Rs. 5.00 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.



PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) focusing on developing capacities of health systems and institutions across the continuum of care at all levels viz. primary, secondary and tertiary and on preparing health systems in responding effectively to the current and future pandemics/disasters




India (MCI) was replaced by the National Medical Commission (NMC) through passage of the NMC Act in August, 2019. The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021 was also enacted on 28th March, 2021. On similar lines, the Government now proposes to bring reforms in the sector of Nursing Education by replacing the existing Indian Nursing Council through a new regulatory body,called the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission , to have a transparent, professional and accountable ‘selected’ Regulator rather than an elected’ Regulator, thereby bringing in accountability,transparency, professional integrity and excellence into the profession

MoHFW has made exceptional progress in digital healthcare delivery and has demonstrated full use of digital health in major national health programmes such as Hospital information system, Online Registration System (ORS), Nikshay-TB programme, Mother and  Child Tracking Programme, Mera Aspataal (a patient feedback system), Integrated Health Information Platform, and many more digital health options which have benefited patients with timely services delivery.



With the prime principles of ‘capture data once and use many times’, and ‘move from silos to system,Government of India released National Digital Health Blueprint (NDHB) as an architectural framework for effective implementation of Digital Health Interventions.



Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) (earlier known as National Digital Health Mission) with aim to develop the backbone necessary to support the integrated digital health infrastructure of the country


To ensure availability of essential drugs and reduce the Out of Pocket Expenditure (OOPE) of the patients visiting the public health facilities, the Government has rolled out the Free Drugs Service Initiative (FDSI) under National Health Mission (NHM).


To address the issue of non-functional equipment across public health facilities, comprehensive guidelines were designed on Biomedical Equipment Management Maintenance Program (BMMP) and disseminated among States/UTs in PPP and in House mode.



A population-based initiative for prevention, control and screening for common Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) has been rolled out in the country under NHM and also as a part of Comprehensive Primary Health Care under Ayushman Bharat – Health and Wellness Centres. Under the initiative persons more than 30 years of age are targeted for their screening for common NCDs.



National Multi-Sectoral Action Plan (NMAP) for prevention and control of NCDs has been developed through series of consultations with various  stakeholders including other Ministries/Departments.



National Leprosy Eradication Programme aims to reduce Grade II disabilities to ZERO among new cases of leprosy. 



“TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan” in Pre COVID era launched by the Government as a part of NTEP.






Kayakalp and Swachh Swasth Sarvatra (SSS) have been expanded to cover urban areas also and U-PHCs have been awarded Kayakalp awards.




RMNCAH+N( Health+Nutrition),India has made unprecedented progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).



National Fact Sheet of Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data. This school based survey of aged 13-15 yrs has been designed to enhance the capacity of countries to monitor tobacco use among youth and to guide the implementation and evaluation of tobacco prevention and control programmes.


Under RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) , Health Research was allocated with Rs 3201 Cr with additional 690Cr under PM- ABHM Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Mission towards One Health Sector Platform towards Biosecurity Preparedness and strengthening MultiSectoral Pandemic Research. 

The Flagship Health Scheme under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) scheme, ABHA Aarogya Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) was introduced in Jan 2022.


Under this mission , every Indian will get a unique 14-digit health identification number that will help to build a digital health ecosystem. This ecosystem will include the personal health ID for every citizen, identifiers for doctors, health facilities and details about personal records


HEALTH INDEX by NITI AAYOG – To promote a co-operative and competitive spirit amongst the States and Uts to rapidly bring about transformative action in achieving the desired health outcomes.

Indicators have been selected on the basis of their importance and availability of reliable data at least annually from existing data sources such as the Sample Registration System (SRS), Civil Registration System (CRS) and Health Management Information Systems (HMIS).


States and Uts are grouped in three categories to ensure comparison among 

similar entities, namely 20 Larger States, 8 Smaller States Mainly Northeastern States, and 8 Uts.


Spending on Medical and Public Health was been reduced from Rs. 74,820Cr to 41,011 Cr in 2022-23 due to lower requirement of vaccination.

Health Sector has been allocated Rs. 86,200Cr in Union Budget, a hike of 16% allocation over 73,931 Cr in FY21-22 by increase in allocation to centrally sponsored public health schemes , to continue building sustainable health care infrastructure and ensure system preparedness to handle increasing health care needs of the country.

PMSSY – Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, an allocation of Rs. 10,000 Cr. an increase allocation of 43% compared to 2021-22 to boost medical education infrastructure.

Human Resource in Health and Medical Education, Rs 7500Cr was allocated, an increase in allocation of 56% to bridge the shortage of Health care professionals. 

The Health & Nutrition Vertical, represents NITI Aayog in various committees and EFC/SFC of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Ministry of AYUSH, Department of Health Research, and Department of Pharmaceuticals. It is also a part of Scientific Advisory Groups of Indian Council of Medical Research, National Institute of Health & Family Welfare, Public Health Foundation of India, etc.
